Teaching Philosophy
To emphasize the importance of supporting diverse learners, I use the acronym “DIVERSE” to describe my teaching philosophy, which stands for:
Democratic - prioritizing student input and fostering a whole-class community
Innovative - leveraging new educational technologies and assignments that allow students to exercise their creativity
Valid - using evidence-based teaching and assessment techniques, such as regular low-stakes quizzes with feedback
Empowering - promoting critical thinking and scientific literacy skills that can inspire students to become agents of change
Relevant - engaging students with relatable examples and real-world applications
Supportive - implementing inclusive and equitable practices that allow all students to reach their full potential
Evolving - constantly improving based on feedback, reading of pedagogical literature, and ongoing professional development
Teaching Experience
I have experience teaching graduate and undergraduate courses and seminars on human cognition and memory, research methods and statistics, writing, introductory psychology, and professional development. I have also taught hands-on science and engineering topics to elementary students (through Mad Science of San Diego), provided piano lessons to children and adults, and tutored K-college students in a variety of topics.
