Diversity, Equity, & Inclusion (DEI)
I am committed to fostering environments in which everyone feels valued and respected, regardless of factors such as race, ethnicity, gender, sexuality, geographic origin, genetics, culture, (dis)ability, physical appearance, age, religion, socio-economic status, and their intersections. To do so, I explicitly acknowledge the powerful roles that privilege, identity, and belonging play in science and education, and actively confront systems of oppression that affect everything from our beliefs and communication to the questions we investigate and the content we teach.
I have made intentional decisions in my research, teaching, and service work to promote the values of diversity, equity, and inclusion. Here are some actions that demonstrate my long-standing commitment to upholding these values:
Challenging the tacit assumption that average effects apply to all learners, especially when interpreting outcomes from samples that do not represent the larger population
Including measures in my research that allow learners to represent their learning experiences in their own words
Reading, citing, learning from, and collaborating with scholars who bring diverse backgrounds, perspectives, and lived experiencesÂ
Increasing access to and engagement with psychological science by disseminating research to broad audiences, especially education stakeholders
Taking a democratic approach to teaching and learning that values transparency in course policies, prioritizes student input, and provides multiple means of engagement, representation, and expression
Co-creating workshops for and with students on the "hidden curriculum" and other topics that can serve as barriers to persisting in academia
Fostering a sense of community among a diverse group of scholars through my creative activities
Advocating for the next generation of psychology professionals within my department, institution, and professional organizations
Continuing my education on DEI topics by seeking out and participating in evidence-based symposia, workshops, conversations, and trainings and sharing what I've learned with my community
